Lioness Falls in Open in Open Well

Divya Bhaskar (Briefly translated from Gujarati)

A Farmer Harijan Aebha Dana yesterday informed forest department about an ailing lioness fallen into open-well in his farm at Gundaran village near Talala in Gir West. Lioness had hunted an animal and after feeding on it went to open-well for drinking water. The well had no parapet protection. Hence it accidentally fell in to the well.

The well was dry and 20 feet deep. Hence forest rescue team saved this 4-4.5 year old cat. Instant hard work and efforts of RFO Chauhan, ACF Katara and Dr. Hirpara are appreciated.

Kishore Kotecha’s comments: Gir forest staff and particularly rescue team headed by Veterinary doctor is doing excellent job. Anytime. Always. My congratulations to them and please keep it up.

Hi friends,

In any movement or protest supporting conservation, it is necessary to get mass support as Jaidevbhai says. One of the tool that can be used is to create a online petition where in visitors endorse their support by signing in that petition. We send out messages for support to various groups and e-lists to endorse the petition. Please visit for full details and creating petition. WWW.Petitiononline.com

BTW very similar boating site is developed at Iswariya lake near Rajkot which is also a very good birding place. But in absence of committed people (including me & excluding Ashokbhai Mashru) the boating has begun only to destroy it.  Let’s not repeat the same with Thol.

Hello friends,

Instead of troubling to find out whether any of the officials are hearing or not we may try to make our voice louder (first of all we may start making it) and if we make it together and collectively it sure gonna make them hear it.

Regards,

Jaidev.

In one of my previous mails i was critical of tourists who expect a 5-star facility at every ecotourism site. We need good interpretation centres with trained volunteers with spotting scopes rather than boats and resturants. Plastics should be totally banned at all such sites and sale of local food stuff like rotla and sabji should be encouraged. That will imporve the participation of local populace also. Good clean drinking water should be made available instead of colas.

6 lions poached in a year, admits Govt

Says No Accidental Deaths Occurred, Silent On Open Well Casualties

Times of India Ahmedabad Edition

http://epaper.timesofindia.com/Daily/skins/TOI/navigator.asp?Daily=TOIA&login=default

Gandhinagar: The state government has admitted that six lions were poached in the last one year in Gir forest. However, the Government has stated that not a single incident of accidental death occurred and is silent on deaths by falling into open wells.

The government in reply to the question asked by Jasdan Congress MLA Kuvarjibhai Bavaliya stated that the government had set up a scheme for the conservation of lions and that the Gujarat State Lion Conservation Society had also been formed.

It said the forest department has given motorcycles to the staff for patrolling along the borders of the forest. The department has also announced reward for people who give information about poachers. A vigil has also been increased on railway stations and bus stations and meetings were also held with local people. The government has also began construction of parapet walls around open wells, it said.

Further the government has also decided to work in co-ordination with the police department for effective monitoring.

However, in reply to the question on how many deaths have been reported due to accidents, the government replied that no deaths were reported. The government has not taken into account deaths occurring due to falling in open wells.

A forest official also pointed out that three lionesses and two cubs were found buried in the fields in mid-October. The animals were buried in a private field after they died due to electrocutions.

This was the first incident in Gir Sanctuary where five animals were electrocuted to death. The incident had taken place outside the sanctuary in Prempara village about three km from Dhari town in the private fields. The official said that this should be deemed as an accident. But the government has only taken into account road accidents while replying to the questions.

A total of 81 lions have died across the country from January 2006 to
2008, with nine of them becoming victims of poaching, Rajya Sabha was
informed on Thursday.........

and

A conference organized by the Union environment ministry on February 12 in the national capital came out with the Tiger Census 2008 and the State of India’s Forests Report 2005. Both came out with dismal figures: a little more than 1,400 tigers are left in the county; and over 725 sq km of forests have vanished between 2002 and 2004. Add to that forestland diverted between 2004 and 2007—over 2,750 sq km according to the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests’ data.

Dear Friends of the Orangutan,
The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation UK would like your help on behalf of our endangered, red-haired cousins. One of our supporters recently had the idea of sending our YouTube video to her MP and received a prompt response, proof that a simple email can have a significant impact, especially when accompanied by effective imagery. Here is the MPs response to this concerned supporter:
Dear Ms McEntee,

Thank you for your email.
The video is indeed shocking and I agree with you about the importance of conserving the remaining forests in Indonesia and the fears expressed in the film that an unintended consequence of the rush to biofuels has been the destruction of forests to make way for palm oil.
Yours sincerely,

David Liddington
So please do take a moment to copy and paste the short message below and send it to any of the following:
You can also send the link to family and friends so they can do the same.
The more people who do this, the greater the opportunity to make the government sit up and listen and help us help the orangutan.
So please, as primates helping primates, together we can make a difference, give the orangutans a voice and ensure they have a future with us in this world.

Dominic Monaghan Photo Exhibition to Aid Orangutans

Dominic Monaghan, well known for his portrayal of “Merry” Brandybuck in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Charlie in the ABC television series, Lost, also counts photography as one of his talents. He’s currently holding an exhibition of some of his favourite works in the Hamilton-Selway Fine Art Gallery, West Hollywood, in California.

Entitled Happy Accidents, this “photographic commentary” combines two of Dominic Monaghan’s passions in life – photography and nature.  He’s a fervent wildlife enthusiast, with a keen interest in orangutans and the work being done at the Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Foundation's Nyaru Menteng sanctuary in Borneo. His concern for the everyday survival of wildlife has led him to pledge 20% of the sales of his photographic exhibition to BOS, to help us in their mission to rescue, rehabilitate and release back into the wild the Borneo orangutans so vital to the preservation of the species.

I am sad to bring you news of yet another lion killed. This is the
eighth lion killed in a four month period. This happened to the west
of our camp almost 50kms, on the neighboring Eselenkei Group Ranch.
The lion was completely innocent, no livestock had been killed. The
group of two murrans (warriors) and five dogs defied the orders of
the elders and saw it fit to go out and killed this immature female
lion......
...&....

I have really sad news and I'm not sure how to put it. It has not
even been ten days since I posted that a lion was killed on

From Madsen's Story:
"The fifth village was our destination. It looked almost like the others but with bigger houses and a few more people around. We asked for Ibu Bowo... just down the road. A woman with a towel around her head and a sarong stood in front of a small house with some kids around. I asked for Ibu Bowo... it was her.
I asked about the orangutan. She smiled and nodded. Perhaps she thought I wanted to buy it. When I told her who I was, her face changed and she told me she had just sold it. Fortunately the kids came to my rescue. "The monkey with the red hair or the grey one?" they asked. The red of course. One of the kids went off, obviously not having heard his mother telling me she had sold it. And minutes later appearing with a tiny infant orangutan screaming at the top of his lungs. The kid was only holding the infant by its hands and in front of him, perhaps so the orangutan could not pee on him. And the poor little thing was terrified. I grabbed him quickly and he hung on to my shirt for dear life. Finally someone who would hold him like his mother had done...."

Gandhinagar, April 11 The two BJP-ruled neighbouring states of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh appear to be on a warpath once again on the controversial proposal of shifting the world-famous Asiatic lions from the Gir forests to Madhya Pradesh.
The contentious issue has now reached the Supreme Court through a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking the apex court's intervention in the matter. A Delhi-based NGO – Bio-diversity Conservation Trust – has filed a PIL in the apex court urging it to direct the Gujarat Government to cooperate with Madhya Pradesh to implement the Centre-aided project for transferring the big cats to the Kuno-Palpur sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh.

Sources in the Gujarat Forest Department said the Supreme Court held a hearing on the PIL last Wednesday and asked the Union Environment and Forest Ministry to send its comments on the issue.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife), Gujarat, Pradeep Khanna was also rushed to Delhi on Wednesday to brief senior lawyer Mukul Rohtagi, who is fighting the case on the state's behalf. A further hearing on the PIL is likely to take place after the court vacation.

"Our lawyer has already argued against the PIL seeking the translocation of the Asiatic lions from Gir to Kuno-Palpur. On my return to Gandhinagar, I have apprised the CMO and also our Forest Minister Mangubhai Patel of the developments," Khanna told The Indian Express on Friday.

Forest Minister Patel said, "It's unfortunate that the issue is being raked up again. I stick to my earlier stand that it is not possible to transfer the lions to the Kuno-Palpur Sanctuary. I'll request the CM to take up this issue with his MP counterpart and persuade him not to press for the relocation of the big cats."

"It seems the MP lobby in Delhi has become active again, pressuring all concerned to ensure that the long-pending proposal for shifting the lions to Kuno-Palpur is accepted by the Centre. But Gujarat will continue to resist this move," said a senior official in the CMO.

Arguing against the controversial proposal, the official said that it was not practical to shift lions to the sanctuary, as the presence of tigers there could trigger frequent clashes between the two large feline species. "In the wildlife history, it is generally observed that tigers and lions can never co-exist in the same territory," he said.

Gujarat officials said the Madhya Pradesh government had mooted the proposal over a decade ago without taking them, and also the local villagers in and around Gir, into confidence. Besides, a large number of poachers found in MP may pose a great threat to Gir lions if they are shifted there, they said.

"Gangs of poachers from the neighbouring state frequently come to Gir. Some of them have also been arrested for involvement in poaching cases. In this scenario, is it advisable to shift Gir Lions to Madhya Pradesh?" said an official.

Wildlife experts in Gujarat are also against the proposal to relocate the lions to the Kuno-Palpur sanctuary – the proposed "second home" being created there for the felines under the Rs 25-crore project.

"The Kuno-Palpur sanctuary has a very inadequate prey-base, with only about 4,000 chitals, sambhars and other herbivores, while there are over 40,000 chitals and 12,000 other herbivores species like sambhar and nilgai here. Considering this contrast, it is not advisable to accept MPs proposal," said G A Patel, a former member of the National Board for Wildlife.

Florida House Has Voted to Eliminate
Manatee Rehabilitation Funding:
Budget Cuts Will Devastate Manatee Rescue
and Critical Care Programs

The Florida House recently voted to eliminate funding that has been provided
for the critical care of sick and injured manatees. Without this much-needed
funding, many manatees will suffer and die. Please write to Florida House
members on the Budget Conference Committee and Florida Governor Charlie
Crist, Speaker Marco Rubio, and Senate President Ken Pruitt as soon as
possible, asking them to preserve these important programs, as they are
scheduled to meet on Tuesday, April 15th.

On the bright side, the Florida Senate has voted to continue funding for
these programs (and funding the retention of more than 60 current law
enforcement positions) through a proposed increase in vessel registration
fees. But for this money to be available, the House will have to agree,
therefore it is critical that you email these House members.

Without state funding, many, if not most, of the more than 60 manatees
rescued on average each year will needlessly suffer and die for lack of
appropriate care.

What You Can Do:
Please click on the link below to send an email to Florida House members on
the Budget Conference Committee and Florida Governor Charlie Crist, Speaker
Marco Rubio, and Senate President Ken Pruitt, asking them to preserve the
state-funded Oceanaria Reimbursements for Manatee Rehabilitation and the
University of Florida Marine Mammal Veterinary program. Be sure to include
your name and mailing address. If you have time, please personalize the
email as it makes more of an impact.

Hi,

Since being appointed almost two years ago, Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne
hasn't listed a single new species under the Endangered Species Act -- even
though federal biologists warn that at least 280 native species could disappear
forever without such protections.

Kempthorne -- a federal employee whose chief responsibility is to protect
America's wildlife and other natural treasures -- has delayed or denied vital
protections for polar bears, jaguars and other imperiled wildlife. On the other
hand, Kempthorne has been quick to approve harmful oil and gas drilling and
other development in sensitive wildlife habitat.

So why isn't he being held accountable? Join me in urging Congress to hold
hearings on Kempthorne's failure to protect our wildlife. Take action online at:

http://action.defenders.org/holdup

It's the Secretary of Interior's job to protect our wildlife and wild places.
And it's Congress' job to hold the Secretary accountable when he fails to do his
job.

Thanks for celebrating Earth Day by helping to protect our wildlife and ensure
responsible management of our natural resources.

Girl attacked by leopard, man by lion in last one week

SIBTE HUSAIN BUKHARI, Expressindia,  Indian Express Newspapers

Tuesday , April 22, 2008

Junagadh, April 21 Arvind Abhangi was working in a mango orchard when a group of lions attacked him from behind a tree. Even as one of the lions sunk its teeth into his thighs, he managed to extract himself from the beastขs clutches, and climb onto a tree

Man-animal conflict is again on the rise in areas around the Gir forest. On an average, two to three such incidents are reported from Junagadh district every week.

On Monday, a seven-year-old girl was injured in a leopard attack, while in a separate incident, a man was attacked by a group of lions, leaving him badly injured.

According to forest officials, the first incident occurred on the outskirts of Kuba ravni village, where a leopard attacked one Bhavisha Mansukh when was was playing in the fields. However, she was rescued by her parents and admitted to the Junagadh civil hospital.

In a separate incident, a group of three lions attacked a man when he was working in an orchard on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred on the outskirts of Ramapara village located on the border of Gir forest. The man was rushed to the Talala town public health centre and later shifted to the Junagadh civil hospital, where he is stated out of danger.

According to reports, Arvind Abhangi (35) was working in a mango orchard when a group of lions attacked him from behind a tree. Even as one of the lions sunk its teeth into his thighs, he managed to extract himself from the beast's clutches, and climb onto a tree. And as he was trying to climb on to the highest branches, another lion caught hold of his foot. He somehow managed to extract his foot and climb to safety. He came down once the three beasts went away and rushed to the public health centre.

Meanwhile on Monday, the carcass of a 9-feet-long crocodile was recovered from a dam on the outskirts of Paswala village in Junagadh taluka falling under Girnar north forest range. It is suspected that some one had killed the reptile.

Acting on tip-off, Deputy Conservator of Forest (Girnar range) rushed to the Paswala Dam along with his staff members and after a two-day exercise fished out the carcass of the crocodile from the dam.

"It appears that the crocodile succumbed to some illness. The carcass has been shifted to the Sakkarbagh Zoo in Junagadh for a postmortem. However, the exact cause of his death can only be ascertained after receiving the post-mortem report," said Range Forest Officer Vijay Yoganandi.

However, he also did not rule out foul play and maintained that patrolling has been intensified in the area surrounding the dam."

Active blaming by Gujarat State Govt. of MP State continues ...... so that Gujarat can keep its monopoly on locally overcrowded dying Asiatic Lions

**NEWS**

The tribal community of Baheliyas is ''actively involved'' in poaching of Asiatic lions in Gir sanctuary, the Gujarat Crime Investigation Department (CID) has said.

''Under the garb of selling traditional medicines and toys, this tribal community members indulge in poaching of wild animals,'' a letter written by CID (Crime) Officer Keshav Kumar to Junagadh Range Inspector General (IG) Mohan Jha said.

There are about 15,000 Baheliyas, basically from Katni in Madhya Pradesh, who are actively involved in poaching all over the country.

''They camp themselves on the outskirts of the town and put up a tent at the roads and sell medicine and toys. They travel mostly in trains and buses,'' the letter said.

''The men go out in the forest during night for hunting animals and women sell them. They travel mostly by trains and state transport buses to avoid checking by police,'' the letter said.

Though the State CID has arrested many tribe members, including the kingpin Sharkashlal, they have not recovered any body parts of the poached lions.

There has been no incident of poaching since April 2007 in Gir, but the CID letter said the 'poaching community' returns when the heat of the police and forest patrolling decreases.

Around eight lions were poached in different areas in and around Gir Wildlife Sanctuary in March and April 2007 for their claws, bones and body parts.

Do not link this news with relocation of lions to MP. This article is not against MP state but it is against poachers. And the fact is MP is the reproduction centre of poachers. This is proved numerous times in numerous poaching cases ALL OVER INDIA!

So please do not make un-necessary comments without knowing the fact.

International Rhino Foundation Newsletter

Hello SANIZE members,

Earth DayHappy Earth Day!

Many of us make New Year's resolutions on January 1 - pledging to do things that will improve our lives, like exercising more, taking a class, or spending more time with our families. This year, in honor of Earth Day, how about starting with three small, simple changes in your life that will help our planet and everyone living on it?

International Rhino Foundation staff each have made three resolutions for Earth Day - changing our behavior to combat pollution and climate change, or protect wildlife and wild places. Some of our resolutions include:

  • I will change all the light bulbs in my house over to compact fluorescent bulbs and will make sure to turn off the lights and unplug all appliances and chargers whenever I leave a room.
  • I will start an organic vegetable garden this year and will stop using any chemicals (like fertilizers, pesticides and weed killers) on my lawn or plants.
  • I will use only environmentally-friendly house cleaning products.
  • I will reduce my water consumption - 3 minute showers!
  • I will use cloth bags for grocery shopping, and remember to put them back in my car so that they are ready for the next time.
  • I will buy locally produced products (e.g., wine, cheese) rather than imported products to reduce my carbon footprint.
  • I will stop buying paper towels and use old, cut up t-shirts and socks for cleaning.
  • I will use a filtered pitcher for drinking water rather than buying bottled water

Most people find that it only takes 3 weeks to form a habit. Think about what you can do beginning today, then make it a habit to benefit the Earth. Small changes can have a big impact.

Please join us! Your example can bring about positive changes in others - and there are so many things each of us can do to help our planet. Visit our website to read more "green tips" and post your own. You can also email us to let us know about your three resolutions to help protect the planet (and rhinos and other wildlife). We'd love to hear from you!

Rhino conservation medicine in NamibiaNotes from the field - Namibia

This dispatch was filed by Dr. Robin Radcliffe, head of the Rhino Conservation Medicine Program, a unique collaboration between the International Rhino Foundation, Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, and the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, which provides high-level veterinary medical support for global rhino conservation efforts both in the wild and in captivity.

With funding from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Dr. Radcliffe is in Namibia, training local veterinarians in using anesthesia to safely capture and trans-locate black rhinos, and in using ultrasound to diagnose rhino pregnancies.
