I had gotten comfortable on the couch, ready to do a bit of
reading. I've been going through some things packed away in the
apartment and had placed a few boxes at the end of the couch. A
fleece throw had ended up on the box, and of course, Buddy decided
that was his new bed. This was well over a month ago. While
reading, I heard a purr so loud it was a rattle. I looked up (I was
lying down on the couch) and I could see Buddy's head, from the eyes
up, looking at me over the edge of the box. Those blue eyes were 3/4
closed and looking quite happy. Grinning, I reached up to pet him,
and he rolled over, belly up, so I reached to scratch his
belly. Four paws with claws extended pushed my hand away. Then very
gently the claws on the front paws gripped my hand and placed it on
his neck. He knew where he wanted his petting.

Whoosh, that certainly piles it on. I'm flattered, of course, but very doubtful
whether it's justified. You do know my triggers though. Internet connections
don't always allow a timely response to any message, and I also think before I
write and send, both of which can cause a delay.

I don't even use a carrier any more. I use a harness when I take the
cats to a vet or Sweetie to the chiropractor. Yes, my chiropractor
also works on animals--cats, dogs, and horses. Sweetie had messed up
her back near her hips when she jumped off a fence and a hind leg
caught between 2 boards. This was 7 years before I found out this
chiropractor also had the certification to work on animals. She was
purring at full volume when awake for 4 days, I could hear her from
across the room. Then the purr dropped in volume when she just did
too much, the muscles are not used to doing what they were now
doing. How well I remember my day of that, too.
Anyway, Sweetie just does a token protest of getting in the harness
because Sweetie likes the way the chiropractor pets her. She has
also completely charmmed him with her personality. He has cats at
home, but he has remarked on her personality more than
once. Favorably, too, I might add.

Does this cat usually go outside to go to the bathroom and maybe is used to that and just waits til it is let outside. It just couldn't hold it any longer and was pissed ( non pun intended ) LOL!

Also it could be upset over the older female cat in the house that doesn't like to share its territory with this new fuzzy friend. He might be marking his territory by urinating to say to the other cat- " hey- this is my area leave me alone!"

I don't know. Just my food for thought?

It is possible to develop an allergy at any time. I have always had cats. My
sister is allergic to cats but had no trouble until she moved out on her own.
Now, when she visits, she is bothered by severe symptoms. My allergist says
it's because she was "used" to the cats but now she is not in constant contact
so they affect her. Having a period of time without an allergen and then being
exposed can produce symptoms, sometimes severe. I don't know if you would
experience symptoms if you got a new cat.

The length of the coat ususally does not affect allergies as it is the dander
that you react to. All cats have dander. Some produce more than others but it
is there.

Also, it is possible that you are allergic to something else the cats are around
or that is in the house you visited. It's so hard to say. Have you considered
being tested for a cat allergy? That might help you get some answers. Just a
thought...

Then just one cat for the last 1.5 years. And now cat-free for a month. I was
thinking of adopting another cat or two. I was at someone's house with 2 older
longhaired cats (both with lion shave) for about 30-45 minutes. They're up for
adoption because the owner and baby are allergic (and home too chaotic for
cats). When I left, I noticed a welt on my forehead. Went away after an hour. Is
it possible to be allergic to some cats but not others? Does furlength have

it was from the cats, might it be a passing thing?

Ya know..... I have wondered that same though. I am allergic to cats as well and I have 5 and have had two litters of kittens. Just do lots of vaccuming and dusting of your home.
I have had some cats I react to and others I don't.

Mostly if I stay away from their spit, or letting them lick me that is. I do much better and don't usually react.
However, cats that go outside I have major allergies too. They bring in everything I am allergic to on their fur.

Long hairs don't seem to make a difference. Just more hair on me.

I think each cat has its own type of dander and it could have something to do with that, or the bacteria in their salivia.

Just wash your hands well after touching them and vaccume a lot and dust and you should be okay. I have noticed that it settles down after a month or so.  I think your body adjusts to the cat to some degree .

Good Luck.

our feline babies..You gave him love, and a good home and took good care of him

Hi Linda,

Some new cats new to take the owners attention by this behaviour.

Probably wanting to state everyplace as his territory as he is the only male.

Sometimes you need to wait for the behaviour to disapear by his own.

If it continue... maybe u will need to keep this male, for some days, on a place or room where he can wee on nothing important with a big litter of his own.

When you let he go on the ful home again he may associate weeing with that place and litter box.

I have so many cats that is absolutly impossible to find who is weeing out of the litter boxes and who is not. But most of my older cats and like 90% of the colony uses the litter box correctly.

Only time will tell if this behaviour is related to hormones still running in his system or if is just a way to take your attention.

Merry Christmas!!!

yesterday i checked the snow outside my window to see if anybody tried getting into the "empty" building next door---i "only' saw animal tracks. this morning my worst fear come true---paw prints to the window outside a shared roof from steps next door. back in 2007 i found a cat right outside, the day after i caught another cat that i was feeding for months, and finally caught cause it had a torn leg.

the lowlifes who lived next door had lots of money for booze and drugs---but probably never fed any pets they had, and now maybe one of them they might have left behind went right up to the window where the lowlife owners lived?

i'll put food out, try to see what kind of animal is about, if a cat i'll go through major ordeal of catching it and taking it to crowded shelter, though i don't have anybody who can help me with this and i live on a limited income.

most of my neighbors are drunks, addicts, welfare moms, other bums; the apartment building next door has had a bad reputation for decades, and went "empty" in march cause of wall street type loan, though some of the lowlifes who lived there go in and out and i have to worry about the place catching fire.

i'm not at all ashamed to say i have a great deal of pity for homeless cats and dogs, and none for my homeless ex-neighbors; living around such careless, worthless, people that others, like myself, have to clean up after, really sucks the life out of a person.

I don't think it matters where you live. You may always find horrible people who just don't CARE about their animals. I lived in the San Francisco bay area all my life, in middle class suberbs. I've only retiired to Oklahoma the last 5 years. Our previous next door neighbors had tons of cats. All from one nice little female kitty, named Meow-Meow Kitty, whom they NEVER had spayed. God only knows where some of her kittens ended up...anyway, they would ALWAYS forget to feed or water them. SERIOUSLY! She would sneak into our kitchen just STARVING, and eat Spikes food. Once I overheard friends of the neighbors commenting on the cats water dish..saying "where's their water? This is all scummy" Their male cats (never nuetered) would roam the streets attacking other cats, searching for food, etc. We fed meow-Meow Kitty, but she wouldn't let any of her offspring come into our yard! Seriously, she wouldn't! She & Spike would sit in the sunshine together, and she would save him from getting his butt kicked from the other cats.

If they didn't spay them, I KNOW those poor cats never had any shots!

I would tell the nighbors "hey, your cats need feeding, or, did u feed them yet?" Once one of their male cats tore a hole in our screen, got into the house, and chased poor Spike around the house. It was horrible! ( He was a big mean kitty) We tried to make them buy us a new screen, but they refused...giving us a few bucks to repair it.

Those people were horrible, and being in a nice neighborhood didn't make any difference.

I love these tips sharing..
Most of the cats that I dream of *stuffing* without energy and at least
one hour and half are homeless on the streets that need a visit to the
vet ..
But I have one or two *rescue* residents sharing my space that will
not go into a carrier without shredding me to pieces.. this trick might
just work.

Well, the cat might have a slightly longer than normal tongue, might

This is a link to the Association of Veterinary Medicine regarding the transmission of H1N1 from people to cats, and treatment when cats contract H1N1:

http://www.avma. org/public_ health/influenza /new_virus/ new_flu_virus_ faq_veterinarian s.asp

It says that the supply of antiviral meds for fighting the disease once a cat has contracted H1N1 is being guarded for use in humans, so I going to be extra careful about exposure of my pets to people right now, as some cats have died.

An article in the NY Times a month or two ago said the H1N1 virus can live for a couple of days on objects touched by someone with the H1N1 virus, like door, shopping carts, etc., so wash hands, and carry a disinfectant to sanitize hands frequently.

Interesting example of a possible zoonose, though the likelihood seems small.
Seven possible cases? As with human H1N1 infection, I'm taking my chances.

As to NYT, the Gray Lady's editorial board has rather tarnished her image of
late and I no longer consider her the most reliable source.

For example, they published an article not long ago that said washing hands and
using sanitizers is probably useless against H1N1 influenza, which they say is
mostly transmitted via the airborne route. True? False? Who can tell with
NYT's single-source policy nowadays? Ask Dan Rather about that.

Not to say that washing hands isn't a good idea in general. Running around with
hair afire due to a NYT article almost certainly isn't.

That's Dora when I'm trying to put her in the carrier, too. The
trick I have found worked for me is to hold both front legs in one
hand, both back legs in the other hand, and put her in, rear first
and place her on her side. I let go of the hind legs, then slam the
door as I jerk my other hand out. She didn't have time to get up and
out before the carrier was closed.

Here's a little trick for loading a cat in a carrier (one person style). Throw a
thin towel on the floor the night before. Maybe put a bit of catnip in it. You
can play with the cat a little bit by tossing it over it's head so it can play
underneath.

The next day, do the same, then roll the cat tighter in the towel wo he can't
get out. He can't see the carrier plus his claws are stashed away. Then put him
in. You can leave the towel inside with him. Works for me.

Maybe he is sick and you should seek a vet?

why would a outside cat leave his tongue hanging out part of the time.
seems to be in great shape , a few years old. i feed him & give him fresh
water every single day ---twice a day . none of the other cats do that. he
might be the oldest. bob

Give original Dawn a try.  It is gentle enough for kittens and is used for
removing oil sludge from seals and other unfortunate creature victims of oil
spills.  You might try olive oil  - rubbing it thoroughly into the skin for
help in the bare areas.

She may be allergic to fleas or have mites.  The Dawn is good to get rid of
the fleas.  Mites need medication.  Check out these catalogs:  Dr.'s Foster
and Smith, Pigeon Supply Store and there is another one I can't think of
now that someone else recomended on the group for some mite medicine.  There
might be a kit in these cataloges where you can send a skin scraping sample
(like a Q-Tip) directly to a lab and see what you find out.  Hope you and
kitty will be on the way to quick relief soon!

Mike, I am sure there are other like-minded people in your area.  Maybe not your neighborhood, but your city or county or region.  I am going to forward you a couple of long lists of rescues that hopefully you will find at least one in your area to help you help these poor cats.  You deserve a medal.

yesterday i checked the snow outside my window to see if anybody tried getting into the "empty" building next door---i "only' saw animal tracks. this morning my worst fear come true---paw prints to the window outside a shared roof from steps next door. back in 2007 i found a cat right outside, the day after i caught another cat that i was feeding for months, and finally caught cause it had a torn leg.

the lowlifes who lived next door had lots of money for booze and drugs---but probably never fed any pets they had, and now maybe one of them they might have left behind went right up to the window where the lowlife owners lived?

i'll put food out, try to see what kind of animal is about, if a cat i'll go through major ordeal of catching it and taking it to crowded shelter, though i don't have anybody who can help me with this and i live on a limited income.

most of my neighbors are drunks, addicts, welfare moms, other bums; the apartment building next door has had a bad reputation for decades, and went "empty" in march cause of wall street type loan, though some of the lowlifes who lived there go in and out and i have to worry about the place catching fire.

i'm not at all ashamed to say i have a great deal of pity for homeless cats and dogs, and none for my homeless ex-neighbors; living around such careless, worthless, people that others, like myself, have to clean up after, really sucks the life out of a person.

Albert, you are modest to boot..
I stand corrected.. 99.9% made of the same stuff of angels.
What you do with helping animals especially, feeding and giving
comfort to otherwise scared cat displaces darkness with healing light.

love and hugs and JOYOUS *holy*day

amelia,

thanks for your kind words, though, despite what i try to do for various
animals, i wouldn't consider myself an angel.

thanks again, and you have a merry christmas, too.

mike.

I was just snuggling with my Peachy and how devastated I would be if she were not a part of our family. It made me think of all of you who have lost one of your kitty family. At this time of year, I am thinking of you and wishing you blessings and loving memories.
